Vietnam officially exported the first batch of fresh longan to the Japanese market

On January 3, 2023, Hoang Phat Company Limited (Hoang Phat Fruit) officially exported the first batch of longan to Japan. Thus, after dragon fruit, mango and lychee, Vietnamese fresh longan has officially hit the shelves in this fastidious market after 6 years of long negotiations.

The first batch of 10-ton longan exported to Japan was transported by air. After this batch of longan, each month, Hoang Phat Co., Ltd. will supply about 70-100 tons of fresh longan by sea and by air to Japan.

One of the most important conditions to export fresh longan to the Japanese market is that the product must have a cold treatment process at 1.3 degrees Celsius within 13 days before shipment to eliminate harmful organisms. At the same time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will issue a phytosanitary certificate confirming that the shipment is eligible for export.

The Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) is implementing solutions to support the granting of planting area codes, packing area codes, and disseminating regulations on the requirements of the Japanese market for vegetables. fresh longan.

Vietnam took 6 years of negotiations to open the Japanese market for Vietnamese longan. Japan is a very strict, transparent, high-quality market in the world. However, this is also a very potential market, each year importing up to 20 billion USD of vegetables and fruits of all kinds, while Vietnam accounts for less than 3%. The import approval from Japan shows that Vietnamese longan has reached high quality standards and can be exploited strongly for good growth in the coming years.

Vietnam currently has more than 80,000 hectares of longan growing, with an output of 600,000 tons/year. However, only about 2,000 hectares and 3 processing and packaging factories have been granted planting codes and exported to Japan. With the initial success and experience of exporting to the Japanese market, Vietnam is expected to continue to promote the introduction of longan into many high-end markets, improving the value and efficiency of domestic production.
